From The Editor

Could it really be time for the ISRI show in Vegas already? Well, not quite, but we are already making our plans to make a big splash with our award winning booth and our legendary cocktail party. Hopefully, you are making your plans to attend both. We will be in booth # 1341 of the exhibit hall and our not-to-be-missed customer appreciation cocktail party will be on Tuesday, April 17 from 5:30 to 7:30pm at the Eye Candy lounge.

With this issue of Dragon Bites, we are introducing version 6.6 of Scrap Dragon. We have added a number of cool new features and some others that you may need to be compliant with the new statutes, ordinances and laws that just won't seem to stop coming.

Check out the new features that we have added to Scrap Dragon, and as always, we are grateful to those customers that have given us the suggestions and feedback that we need to keep Scrap Dragon on the cutting edge.

Scrap Dragon Support

If you have called for support recently then you already know that we have a new virtual call center. You can now call for support on our new Toll Free number 1-855-9-DRAGON (855-937-2466). Your call will be answered by an automated attendant and based on your selections, your call will be routed to the best person to handle your issue. During certain times of the day you may experience an extended wait on hold until a real person answers your call, and we certainly apologize for that. If you prefer not to hold, you can leave us a voice mail message that will be returned.

You can continue to e-mail routine questions to [email protected] and don't forget that many of your questions can be answered by searching our Knowledge Base at www.scrapdragon.net. Providing you with the best possible training and support continues to be our number one goal.

Consider yourself invited

This is the fifth consecutive year that we have had a 'Thank You' party for our customers that attend the ISRI convention and it has always been great fun. We enjoy hosting our customers and they enjoy socializing with other Scrap Dragon users. If you will not be attending the convention yourself, please let anyone who will be there from your company know that they are invited to join us.

This year, our customer appreciation cocktail party will be held on Tuesday, April 17th from 5:30 to 7:30pm at the Eye Candy Lounge, which is located in the casino of the Mandalay Bay hotel. Come as you are and have a drink on us.

Staying Compliant

When will it ever stop? Just when we make Scrap Dragon meet one requirement they come up with 10 new ones! It almost seems like some governments have declared war on metal recycling. Can't we vote them all out of office? We vote for None of The Above!

We have now added support for delivery trailers, which has been a requirement in Florida for some time. This took more than a little effort and you will see some differences in the data entry screens for delivery vehicles. Like the delivery vehicles, you will be able to save the delivery trailer with the ticket and with the customer. Trailers are listed with other delivery vehicles, but use the body style of Trailer. With direct access from the Edit Details screen, it is now even easier to maintain the customer's delivery vehicles.

Florida also requires that you report any identifying marks on the customer and we have now added a field for you to enter this. Both the identifying marks and the delivery trailer will now print on the FDLE report.

Some new ordinances have put a limit on the amount of money that can be paid to a customer in a single day. Since many customers bring in scrap several times a day, there has not been an easy way for you to comply with this requirement. Now, the previous payments for the day are displayed in the payment screens.

For purchased vehicles, you are required to enter the VIN, Make, Model and year of the vehicle. To make it easier to comply with these requirements we are now able to decode and update these fields from the VIN number that you enter.

We already supported the ability to print signatures on scale tickets and receipts for our customers that use our Topaz signature pads. We have now extended that feature to include reprinted tickets and receipts. We have also added the ability to include a thumbprint on these documents for our customers that use the USB Crossmatch Verifier, but the feature will not work with the Ethernet model.

South Carolina and Texas now require that a certificate be kept on file for a customer certifying that they are permitted to sell certain items of scrap metal. We can now accommodate that requirement in Scrap Dragon and Jpegger. Scrap Dragon will allow entry of the certificate number and expiration date, and if you have a suitable document scanner, you will be able to scan the certificate into Jpegger and associate it with the customer.

One time License Scanning

In previous issues of Dragon Bites, we have promoted the virtues of the Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500 scanner for scanning in signed tickets, titles, customer certificates and any other required documents. Recently, one of our customers asked us for a way to scan drivers licenses in for his Valued Customer tickets. These were one time customers that he did not want to add to his customer file, but was still required to keep a copy of the customer's license on file.

We recommended the Fujitsu ScanSnap S1100 for this because it has a straight through paper path that can handle a rigid driver's license without getting stuck, and it is cheaper than the S1500. The unit worked great and the customer was pleased with the solution. We liked the idea so much we decided to support one time license scanning with the same ScanShell 800r that we use for adding customers to the customer file. If you have a ScanShell scanner, you will now be able to scan in licenses from the Ticket Info screen and the license image will be stored in jpegger with the other images for the ticket, but without doing any OCR. Thanks Chris!

Automatically save documents to JPEGger without scanning

A really cool new feature in Scrap Dragon allows you to save your printed documents to jpegger automatcially without having to physically scan them. The pictures that are automatically saved with each ticket can now include a PDF of the Scale Ticket, Cashier Receipt, Remittance Advice and Check.

Just check the PDF box in Local Computer Options next to Scale Ticket, Cashier Receipt, or Remittance Advice and that document will be automatically saved to jpegger as a PDF document at the same time that it is printed to your printer. This process happens very quickly in the background and without physically scanning the document! If you are using a signature pad, and you have a custom form with the customer's signature and/or thumbprint on the form, then the PDF document that gets saved into Jpegger with the ticket will also have the signature and/or thumbprint on it.

Likewise, check the PDF box in the Checking Account setup screen in Program Options and a PDF copy of every check will be automatically saved to jpegger with the ticket at the same time that it is sent to your printer.

This feature requires JPEGger version 2.0 or later.

Is your inventory out of control?

Keeping control of your inventory seems to be one of the hardest things to do in the scrap metal business. Maintaining a computerized model of your inventory can be a nightmare of upgrades, downgrades, category shifts, evaporation, shrinkage, substitutions and negative balances. While we have designed Scrap Dragon to be a very simplified model, it still requires a consistent effort to make our model match your reality. We are constantly trying to make that process easier based on the feedback that you give us.

In our latest version, we have again added some new features that we think will make your life easier. In scrap buying, when adding non-auto purchased items directly to inventory, both in the Edit Details screen and the Edit Paid Ticket screen, the Add to Inventory button now opens the Inventory Pack screen. This allows you to add the pack to inventory using any button and description that you choose.

Previously, all inventory moves had to be entered in the back office. Now, we have added a touch-screen enabled, scale connected, Move Inventory screen to the main inventory menu. This will allow you to enter inventory movements from your warehouse kiosk. Use of this screen is restricted, and will only be available to those users with the proper clearance.

Because we have seen so many customers that are not rolling their inventory balances on a monthly basis, the system will now issue a warning if you haven't rolled the inventory in 60 days. Preparing your data for the inventory roll will now be easier as the inventory pre-roll will produce a report of inventory items with negative balances. The dreaded Numeric Overflow errors will no longer display or stop the inventory reports or processes. This will make it easier to find and eliminate items with badly distorted average costs. These distortions are almost always a result of allowing the computer inventory on hand to go negative. An obvious example of the model not matching reality; we have yet to see any real negative inventory in a srap yard!

We have added another 'drill down' button to the Inventory Status screen that will produce a report of shrunk and unshrunk MTD purchases. This will make it easier to see what commodities make up the inventory purchases that are displayed on this screen.

Toughbook Closeout - 40% off

We still have a few Panasonic Toughbook Wireless Monitors available. These cool little handheld devices are discontinued and our supply is dwindling. Much smaller and lighter than the wireless computers that have replaced them, they work well with Scrap Dragon and are durable enough for use in a scrap yard. Unfortunately, Panasonic has phased them out and in fact will not be releasing a driver for use with the Windows 7 operating system. Consequently, we are closing out our remaining supply of new units at 40% off the $2,000 list price. We also have a few lightly used 'demo' units available for 50% off. For more info, download the Specification Sheet or the Purchasing Power brochure. Only available while supplies last. Sorry, no returns.

At the ISRI convention, we demonstrated the Apple Ipad as an alternative wireless solution. We are using the Wyse Pocket Cloud RDP/VNC app and a hard shell case from Ivyskin. While the Ipad is lightweight, it has no hand strap, is not as rugged as the Toughbook, is not weatherproof and requires a bare finger touch (no gloves or stylus). The app is easy to download, install and set up. If you use an RDP connection, the host screen is unavailable when the remote is attached. But, the VNC connection will leave both screens enabled. The same Wyse Pocket Cloud RDP/VNC app is available for the droid phones. Yes, you can run Scrap Dragon on your Evo!

We strongly suggest that you start the patch installation at the end of the day. If you need help updating, you can call our help desk 855-937-2466.

You are entitled to get all of our upgrades as a benefit of your maintenance contract, so why not download and install them today? Please call if you have any questions or need any help upgrading.
